At present Moscow is the city where the past and the present, the great and the small exist side by side in reciprocal tolerance and respect. Nearby old monasteries and cathedrals, there tower over modern business centres and skyscrapers. But, originally, Moscow is the very centre of Russia's history. Red Square - the symbol of the metropolis - is the most renowned city square in Moscow and, perhaps, one of the best-known in the world. It separates the Kremlin, the former royal fort and currently the official residence of Russia's President, from a historic trading quarter known as Kitai-gorod. As the principal streets of Moscow radiate from here in every direction, Red Square is ordinarily considered the central square of Moscow and of the country. Resurrection Gate is known as the only existing gate of the Kitai-gorod in Moscow. It joins the north-western end of Red Square with Manege Square and gives its name to Voskresenskaya Square (known as Resurrection Square) situated nearby. Just in front of the chapel there is a bronze plaque marking kilometre zero of the Russian highway system. Alexander Garden was one of Moscow's first public parks. It spans along the western Kremlin wall in front of the Moscow Manege. The State Historical Museum of Russia is a museum of the Russian history placed between Red Square and Manege Square. There are displays of remnants of the prehistoric tribes that live on the territory of present-day Russia as well as extremely valuable masterpieces of art acquired by the Romanovs. The total number of objects in the collection displayed in the museum amounts to millions. They say Moscow will surely exhaust you before you exhaust its possibilities. |
